I remember we had a kid got the crap kicked out of him one night coming out of a chip shop not far from the dock gates. There is a or was a pub just facing it. Next night 20 odd of us went back drifted into the pub in ones and twos , kid points out who turned him over, shall we say they would not have been bothering anyone else for a spell.
In those days we looked out for our own.
