It's going to depend on what you want from your exhaust. Generally, on carburetted bikes, they'll always run sweeter with everything stock, the Japs have more funds for R&D than everyone else. But there are good cans out there. I agree with Kentish - had a Viper can on my thou when I got it - lovely and loud but ran like s**t. Much better with the standard can, but then good with the Scorpion it has now. Definitely more pull from mid to high (baffle removed). Pretty loud tho'.
Exhaust and freer flowing air filters (pod, eg S&B, K&N) with carb UPjetting (mains, maybe raise the needles a notch) works better than just changing one side or the other. I had a GSXR slab-side with Pete Gibson exhaust, it was a direct copy of the Yoshi works pipe, full system, carbs with no air filters (not recommended) and jetting the same as Mick Grant's Superstock bike, went like a bat out of hell compared to standard.
I've also had a Kwak Z650 with Laser 4-1 and S&B filters, upjetted on the mains only, ran sweet.
