I picked up a broken headlight from a local breaker open it and remover the right side reflector and other bits . Then opened my own one (carefull use of a heat gun to melt the glue holding it together) and removed the left reflector and replaced it with the right one from the one from the breaker.

Once you opened up the unit, was the reflector a straight fit and could you still adjust aim as before?

No the right side reflector is the one on the right hand side of the bike with the H4 bulb.
As far as I can remember (it was 10 years ago) I had to do a lot of fiddling to get it working, but cannot remember the exact details. I think I removed the adjusters and glued them on the opposite sides. I know I used apoxy resin for something and it may have been for the adjusters. It took a fair bit of work but the result was worth it.
