I tried the mold your own ones, they still need to get down the ear canal but even then I didn't find them that effective possibly because the ear is squished in to a different shape when in the helmet so the plug doesn't fit snugly. I find the bog standard Howard Leight Laser-lite do a better job. Have you tried their max-lite (I think, they're all green) ones as they're supposed to fit smaller lug holes?
I keep meaning to experiment with some foam in the helmet to get a better seal around my ears and neck, I'm sure that would help a lot.
