Having watched Holmes on Homes, a Canadian builderI have learnt you have to stop the warmer air from the garage getting to the cold side between the polystyrene and the roof boards.
So once the polystyrene is pushed in tight against the joists it need to be sealed plastic sheeting and tape is what he uses.
In Britain I believe after the lessons learned in the seventies you have to have ventilation between the insulation and the underside of the roof.
