Don't put leather into the washing machine, it will make it dry out and crack! If it gets really bad, go to a specialist leather cleaner, anything else risks buggering it up completely.
I agree with nick crisp about Neats foot oil, also there's stuff called Leather Food which will keep it in good condition.
If it starts smelling mouldy, buy some 99% isopropyl alcohol, mix it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle, then spray it inside and out and let it air dry which should deal with the mould.
I also use some stuff called Mr Jojo on my leather jacket which conditions it and helps keep it waterproofed, although probably no leather jacket will ever be guaranteed to be 100% waterproof, it will eventually absorb moisture if there's enough of it.
If (when) it does get wet, hang it up from a shaped hanger somewhere where it will get a cool air stream over it (not hot air or over a radiator as that will dry it too fast) and let it dry slowly, then re-condition it.
