Cheap = usual things: poorer quality material, poorer stitching etc. You want to try them on to make sure that the knee armour is going to sit in the right place. On some, the cut is so bad you can end up with the armour down over your shins. My last pair I ended up taking the armour out of the knees cos they stuck out like a couple of duck bills when I sat on the bike. Best to go for reasonably well known brands. Spada are quite good and not too expensive. Weise I believe are quite good these days. I'm sure other people can recommend some other good ones too. Of course then you can go more expensive - Alpine Stars, Dainese etc, so should be something out there to suit your pocket.
