Also- if the piston isn't pushed 'straight' in it can jam easily and give the impression its not going anywhere, this is where the adjustable wrenches come in handy and why you need 2 to push evenly on both sides of the piston, beware of damaging the paint Finnish on the calipers though so tape up the metal grips with gaffer tape or something.
Personally after pumpinmg out the pistons slightly and cleaning them with brake cleaner and a toothbrush and lightly greasing them I put the old brake pad back over the pistons and push against that so I don't mark the pistons!
This is just a reference as I think they have several names, can get them from halfords etc
