Testing couldn't hurt I guess but as you said, it is very rare for the fan to kick in.
I replaced the radiator on my bike with my old one but the fan on the old one had sort of melted (burnt down bike) and the current one decided to sheer off of the old radiator so it was also useless. So, I've been running the bike without the fan and I haven't had any real issues because of this
