Best piece of advice I had was: Take your budget, slash it, spend the rest on training, because you're far better off riding a cheap piece of junk properly than buying a shiny expensive bike and stacking it into a hedge.
With this in mind, I spent £300 on a 30 year old GS125 which I can sell for the same cash, and freed up more for better training. And it really has paid off.
