Front end whirring

I'm confused. The speedo on a Fazer is electronic isn't it ? Otherwise what's the point of the magnets and electric cable coming up from the front wheel ? Maybe I'm wrong, wouldn't be the first time.
Opinions are like A**holes, Everyone has one. Some people seem to have more than one though which is a bit odd.
