May need bleeding and fluid changing as well if you have no history of when it was last done, you should only need to tap the lever for it to bite when it's working correctly.
Also get some WD40 or brake cleaner and spray the joint of the foot lever to clean it up as it gets a build up of crap in there, and makes it feel spongy, then give it a bit of an oiling.
You should do that once a month anyway, it's very effective.
