hi MRS, when checking oil alls check on level ground with bike on centre stand and try and keep level on top mark  ....can you hear the grinding noise when standing ? if not almost certain it will be the chain,remove the front sprocket cover and give it a good clean,there be lots of chain lube and s*it in there,check tension and also wheel alignment  ....let us know how you get on
