i bought a really tidy fazer. the chain and sprockets looked fine, but i was hearing horrendous noises at times. changed chain and sprox, its like a different bike. i think the chain must have stretched. if you have the cash, change them first. go for a ride out with some guys on here and they may be able to advise you some more.
