Ye, best to have a bit of pressure on the gear lever just before you actually change gear.
I second the opinion that high revs should be left for higher gears and not 1st to 2nd. If nothing else then it's just machine sympathy to get into second before accelerating hard/reving higher. Not everyone will agree I'm sure.
