I find diesel particularly good for cleaning chains, petrol on the other hand is ofcourse likely to damage the O-rings in the chain.

Engine oil is fairly effective as a chain lubricant, and provides a good purpose for used engine-oil. You should have minimal issues with fling if you apply it with a toothbrush.
