I think it does depend on your age and prior history.
My insurance certainly went up when I got 3 points at the age of 24, and that was more than 10 years ago when insurance companies were a lot more forgiving than they are now.
Given that these awareness courses now exist, I'd expect the insurers to load premiums even more for points, as the 'lesser' offences that used to get you points now don't.
