the important part is that you connect the neg last away from the battery as you can get a spark as the last lead makes the circuit and more so as it's disconnected, batteries produce hydrogen gas which can explode.
I had a battery explode on my starfire, due to overcharging, the zener diode had failed, and a friend blew the battery on his range rover jumping a car off, he was at home near a tap so washed the acid of his face and was ok but the damage it did was expensive, thats only twice in 40+ years but twice too much.
