The lugs snapping on the magnetic section (Part 14 as listed above by darrsi) is a common ailment. The speed sensor itself is less common but has been known to happen. Mine went bust back in August and I ended up getting a second hand replacement from someone breaking a Fazer. If it is the sensor then you will likely get the rev needle issue - it flicks every 3-4 seconds between 0, 4000 and the actual revs - refer to the owners manual, it is listed in there. If its the lugs, you will likely just get a reading of 0 on the speed dial
