Master socket goes straight outside. Test socket still rings once and stops. I feel like I've been fobbed off with 'there's no fault on the line' 
There is no internet at ma's place, so it seems a simple enough thing to test, but it's a fault our end apparently. I'll call them again tomorrow. Thanks.
