My commute is 35 miles and the bike thrives on it... especially the battery which is still the original one. 
As for warming it up: I don't annoy the neighbours by letting it idle, just take it gently for the first few minutes.
Cars: never had an engine fail, it's always been the bodywork rusting away that has sent them to the knacker's yard. :'(
