Dear Mr. Wildman

Thank  you  for  your  recent  enquiry  regarding  the  requirement  for
motorcyclists  to  remove their helmets on certain occasions whilst on Esso
forecourts.  We  value our motorcyclist customers and should like to assure
you  that  any  complaint received by Esso is taken extremely seriously and
followed up appropriately.

It  is a legal requirement that our Sales Advisors supervise our forecourts
to  ensure  the  safety and security of our customers and staff onsite.  We
are  also  required  to  check that anyone using a fuel pump is at least 16
years  of  age  - the minimum age for buying fuel.  Consequently, our Sales
Advisors  visually  check  our  customers  before  authorising  the pump to
dispense  fuel.  Whilst  we do not insist as a rule that all motorcyclists
remove  their  helmets  before  dispensing  fuel, we may do so if the Sales
Advisor is unable to see the individual clearly.

In  addition,  in  the  past  there  have been a number of robberies at our
service  stations  where those responsible have worn motorcycle helmets for
the  sole  purpose  of hiding their faces to avoid being identified.  It is
also,  therefore,  our  standard  policy to ask anyone wearing a motorcycle
helmet  to  remove  it before entering our stores. We do this with the best
intention  of trying to ensure the safety and security of our customers and
staff.

I  regret  if  the  request  for  you  to remove your helmet caused you any
offence, and hope that you understand the reasons for our policy.
