The popping is caused by air being drawn in by the AIS.
From memory on the left hand side under the airbox and tank there is a rubber hose going downward toward the engine somewhere.
Unclip it, stuff a suitable bung in the pipe ( a marble works well) and connect the pipe back up and hey presto no more backfiring!
Get the front suspension set up and you should be good to go.
