First thing to do is clean, lubricate and adjust your gear shift mechanism. Then check and adjust your clutch cable and check that the clutch is operating, if it selects 1st and 2nd gear and pulls away properly it should be ok.
Another thing that can break is the detent spring which makes if difficult to select gears, this is also easy to change, normally behind a plate close to the front sprocket.
