I realise this won't help the debate but if you're having to justify buying one you probably don't really want/need one.
An advantage of a cheap phone and contract is you can sometimes get free gifts, about a year ago I was due for an upgrade and went for a Nokia 6303 on a contract that gave me a free PS3. Other advantages include simplicity to use, cheap replacement costs, no need for insurance, and less concern about theft and damage (I dropped my phone the other day, it still works and I think it cracked the pavement).
You might even get a shiny new tabletÂ
