sounds as if the 1000 is very simular to the 600...ive removed the carbs on my 600 several times lately :rolleyes pulling them out with the cables attached and then removing the cables last.putting the carbs back on i started with the cables first...dont think you will be able to replace them with the carbs on the bike :\
top tip......place some rags on the gen cover so you can rest the carbs on and remove the cables
