spookily enough i just replaced my cables this week - pretty sure you'll need to pull the carbs out to change both. It's a bit of a fag, not 'difficult' as such but an effort none the less. It took me around 6hrs in total (incl time spent making tea). If you're replacing one you may as well change both.
Note: to get the carbs out you need to slide the air filter back - and to do that you need to take the battery out, something Haynes failed to mention...
Also take care to route the cables correctly... it's a special kind of dumb numpty who whips the old cables out without noting their position first.. ahem... :rolleyes
