Extremely rich at all throttle/rpm combinations or just at full throttle? It's usually the latter. Ivan's kits get the air/fuel ratio right across the board.
Show this to your mechanic and see what he says. Porting the intake stubs takes me 20 - 30 mins. The airbox lid mod is a 10 minute job.
