The fuel pump clicking you describe is as it should be.
When it has been stood for more than a few hours some of the petrol in the flout bowls evaporates away, so on a cold start the fuel pump clicks away to fill the up. When warm it has only been stood for a short time so not much topping up is required and very little or no clicking is heard.
Hence I don't think that is the problem.
