Question I would have is what make of Heated grips are you fitting?
If Oxford one's then it is recommended (by Oxford and some Yam Dealers) to fit directly to the battery otherwise they won't work correctly.
As far as what wire is correct i usually use a circuit tester of some description to check as I always stuff up electrics
