Sounds like the spacer and locknut were re-assembled incorrectly.  I presume previous owner installed the springs?  If so, you need to check their work and correct as necessary.

Not difficult.  Read this to get an idea of what's inside and in particular, how to set the spacer and locknut so that the preload adjuster will screw on properly.

Ignore the parts about cutting the spring and spacer - it's not relevant to your issue.  Instead, focus on pics 23 and onwards.
