I think it is impolite to leave one's hat, not to mention helmet, on when entering premises. I always take it off. Put it in my topcase, or carry it in my hand (don't like bikes that don't have topcases 
).
It was interesting once I entered a bank in a hurry and took my helmet just at the door... while wearing balaclava underneath. The look on staff's faces: priceless! :rollin
