Spiders are computers that surf the internet in an automated way. They are used by search engines to build their knowledge of what is out there. They are also used to gather email addresses etc by spammers etc.
As for the placement of the users online, it is an option to put it at the top as well as the bottom. If most people prefer it at the top it can be moved.
PS I'm knackered so if what I've wrote don't make sense then don't think it's your understanding that is poor :o
