Mine did the exact same thing on Monday when I started it for the 1st time since before Christmas. I too shat myself a teeny bit but it went out on the 2nd start up & level is fine so I left it running for a few minutes & all seemed fine so I went for a 50 mile blast just to be sure. 
I think my fuel pump was a bit reluctant too as the noise it made was slightly strange but all is back to normal now. I am blaming the very cold weather.
