front sprocket
#2
How many miles has the bike done? Has it had a replacement chain? How much free play is there in the chain? Also are the teeth on the rear sprocket pointed or do they have nice wide flat sections at the top (as they should)?

Try putting it on the centre stand, then turn the rear wheel by hand. If you hear the noise it probably means that the sprocket is worn and needs replacing. Depending on the answers to the above questions, the chain and rear sprocket might need doing too.
