Lots of top ideas to tracking where the problem is already posted.

However, if it turns out to be a hacked account then change your contacts' email addresses to include an invalid character at the end, such as an ! or something.

If you get error messages then you know you have a hacked account (I'll go with Major Rants money as to why)
