Email spam problem

i have various email addresses for various reasons and I noticed that 1 of my hotmail accounts was hacked and sending out spam. I deleted the entire address book, I left it 2 weeks then re-entered addresses and it stopped. luckily that account only had about 2 dozen accounts so wasn't a PITA but wouldn't like to do it with my main account as I have hundreds of contacts in there!!
