Idea's on what engines will fit in the fzs600 (2001)

I've taken it to my local bike garage and they said by the time they get to the gearbox which is apparently housed somewhere deep inside the lump, it would cost less to buy a second hand engine and labour costs included then to fix the box. Weather this is true or not I do not know.

I have had a few friends say I might be able to fit a newer 600 engine in but does anyone know what's like the newest year I could get up too. Like mines a 2001 would I be able to fit like a 2004?
