I just thought I'd update this in case anyone else finds this thread.
As the old mirror stalk was sheared off I decided it wasn't worth trying to preserve the housing, so I took a hacksaw to the widest part of of the housing to get the mirror glass out.
I then held the replacement housing (without glass) in front of an electric fan heater for a few minutes to soften the plastic and make it expand and then pushed the glass from the old one in, neat as you like
I then had to go and test if, of course, with a nice ride this afternoon
