It's not often that you hear of problems with the actuating mechanism at the clutch end, Steve.
Have you released the cable at both ends and checked that you don't have a broken strand in the cable snagging things up?
If the cable is 100% free-running, logic says it has to be the actuating mechanism but I'd double check everything else first.
