Rather than take the engine out and repair, I figured a replacement engine from a breaker was the cheapest solution. Agree with you that engine swaps are a pain in the proverbial though.
Sorry I can't offer any advice (other than to talk to Deefer), but will be very interested to hear how it goes.

Your problem will be with the selector fork or locating dogs on the second gear. Mine had a fecked 6th gear and constantly jumped out of gear, i changed the gear box and all the selectors. You really need to split the engine to check that the second gear is ok...........Think on the plus side, winters here.....well nearly, so you can do it at your leisure, plus all the other bits and pieces we never get round to concerning the engine.
