How much is your FZS 1000 worth?

:lol  I did all of the same before I went for an MT. I genuinely thought “What’s the point?” According to some dyno reports, It’s hardly got any more quoted rear wheel power than the Gen1 and similar torque figures. I Read a load of reviews and hunted out dyno readings etc etc with quite varied alleged results.


Then I went and had a decent test ride. I genuinely didn’t expect it to be noticeably quicker than the Gen1 and thought that the test ride would rule it out. Clearly that wasn’t the case. I can only give seat of the pants opinion, having had neither dynontested. Having the opportunity to ride both back to back, I would say that the MT definately builds speed quicker.


Depending on which dyno results you believe, it could just all be down to the gearing on the MT. I don’t think there’s much difference in weight between the two. Top end speed is largely irrelevant to me but again, quoted figures aren’t significantly different.


I would say the biggest issue that I have with the MT is the tank range. It’s much less than the Gen1 and is the main limiting factor for use for Touring.

I think 140 bhp for a full monty gen 1 is a little optimistic.
Maybe with a full exhaust system like an Akra or Yoshi.
My full monty'd gen 1 made 135 with 78.71 ft/lb torque


Also if they refer to the MT10 as an FZ10, the chances are it's an American import which makes slightly less power. ( According to our American cousins on the forums)


My standard MT10 made 143.41 with 78.66 ft/lb torque.


It's the way the MT10 delivers its power and the way it freely revs which makes it feel so different even though the figures are very close.
You can see this with the distinct rises in power curves on the graph as opposed to the smooth and linear one of the Fazer.
My Fazer is faster top end but again the MT10 has a rev limiter which can be removed with an ecu re flash. (You can see the MT10's power curve was still climbing when it suddenly drops off).
Above 150mph, it's all about the aerodynamics and the Fazer is better in that department I think.


You don't have to ride the MT10 like a dick but.......you don't have to ride anything like a dick.......100mph+wheelies say you should  :b

Sorry should have said the full monty figures were for full full monty - yup full system fitted.
Yeah motorcycle.com are American.  Was struggling to find UK figures.
Cheers for the graphs - perfect.
I guess it must be the short wheelbase, high bars and as you say the way it delivers power.
Have you kept yours standard Dazza?
Fella at work has the SP version.  He's removed the CAT and had it flashed.  But it's silly loud - anti-social loud.He's offered me a shot, but I don't like riding other folks expesnive bikes. Don't mind when it's older bikes.
I guess I need to try one.

That is the one box it does not tick.  I don't mind if it drinks, but give it a decent tank - 17ltrs is pretty mean.

Yes, I've kept mine standard.
I don't like too loud. It's one of the main reasons I'm not interested in removing the cat.
Apparently, there is a map for a tune with the cat still in place or a Leo Vince  mid pipe with a small silencer box fitted helps keep the noise down.
Maybe tempted this year to have it tweaked but my priority is to upgrade my car to a Euro 6 to get round the ULEZ......Damn the environment. :lol

Yeah I've seen the Leo Vince de-cat pipe.  It might help.
I don't know why nobody offers a replacement de-cat box. 

When I comes to noise I like to think my Fazer thou is about perfect.  It's got a standard length straight through can and the EXUP valve works.  It doesn't wake the neighbours when I'm off to work in the morning but it also sings when you wind on the throttle.  Lots of de-catted bikes are just nasty.
I also wondered why nobody butchers the cat box.  I found this......
Might interest you Dazza.  Would need a custom flash.  But I'm thinking it's nice and discreet.  It's an R1 but should be very similar for the MT10.  Very doable I think.

It has gone a bit off topic,  but hay so what.It does bring up another question,  with all the mods we have done to are bikes, exhausts ,paint work, screens etc does this distract the FZS 1000 from becoming a  future classic as we have modified them.When you see the older " classic " everyone wants them completely standard . Yes they can be but back, but than they are not as good as the modded bike. Does the FZS 1000 need to be modded to become the "future classic " or can a standard bike make it?

In terms of being worth money as a classic.  The more standard the better.
You want 100% unmolested.  Discreet mods like an Ivans kit and rear shock to fix 'issues' I wouldn't think would do any harm.  But things that change the appearance I think are a no no.

Ironically, mine is closer to stock now than it has been for nearly 15 years.  Had to put so many OE bits back on to keep the MOT testers happy  here in Spain. 


Paid £2200 for a '99 R1 in 2011.  Only 15k miles on the clock today and totally original, right down to having the undertray completely uncut.  Everyone seemed to cut those off back in the day.  Saw one in similar condition go recently on ebay for well over £4k so I'm hanging on to that beauty for a few more years yet. Smile

When the R1 was launched in 1998, everyone wanted the blue one. Very few buyers fancied the one with the red saddle. Now an unmolested red/white one is very much the one to have. The blue one looks far nicer to me though.

I have seen many times a bike which could not be given away when they were new are now worth silly amounts of money .Seems odd to think it is simply that it was rare and a low volume seller that makes it worth more.

Thats my thinking with me evo fatboy. it looks stock but has uprated coils/leads/cam and carb (hsr42 flatslide mikuni) the pipes obviously aint stock but still follow the shape of the oes. People spent fortunes altering them to their taste but destroying the classic silhouette and ultimately de valuing them. The back wheels got fatter over the years so some paid for a conversion lol, then twenty years after mine was built the purists wanted a softtail with a skinny arse end again so Harley obliged with a 16k new model one, like they do. When fatboys had my old 1340 single cam engine they were Harleys best seller, they couldn't get enough to satisfy demand (I still got the original purchase receipt for mine, 14k in 1998lol) now they are high tech and high powered, and in real terms a lot cheaper, they are one of their worst sellers. The sad truth is they were only ever good for grunting about at 55mph (ive had mine up to a ton but it wasn't nice for it or moi..), and everything made sense at that speed. You can wear an old pisspot and shades and never be uncomfy or be pushing a bike past its limits. Now they are quick, they make no sense at all. I know they aint everybodies cup of tea by any means, and I couldn't have one if it was my only bike, but for a useable classic that will be worth a few bob to my granddaughter one day, it fits the bill.

I read a article on line about a very big auction in Las Vegas and it said the bikes have to be 100% original and any deviation effects the price.  custom, special build and modded bikes do not appreciate very much and don't attract the big interest.
My bike will always be just my fun  bike, don't see any fun riding a classic bike that you are to scared to use it because it might get dirty and effort its value. I don't like getting my bike dirty,  but hay just wash it and go out again.
Just wandering if any one is keeping there FZS 1000 all standard, immaculate and all covered up waiting for the price to go up?
