Today's "What Gets My Goat" - NO POLITICS!

Typical shoddy behaviour.
Except that the French are not allowed to harvest these stocks at this time of year, in their own waters, in order to preserve the stocks.
The law doesn’t apply to British vessels so they sail into French waters and hoover up the stocks.
So yeah, one can understand the French fishermen’s frustration.

Could this all change with Brexit !?

The Icelanders were protecting their stocks from British vessels that were determined to fish the stocks to extinction.  Iceland stood it’s ground against the UK.  Iceland eventually secured a 200 mile Icelandic exclusive fishery zone and in doing so was able to preserve and maintain it’s stocks and fishing industry.

BREXIT?  BREXIT?  Did somebody say BREXIT? :lol
Dunno F4celess, but what I do know is this.  Before the BREXIT referendum the price of a brand new MT10 was £9999.00The price today is £11,499.00
Expect the price to rise further if there is a no deal BREXIT.
The best EU deal is of course the deal we already have.

It was the same.  Iceland claimed/wanted control over international waters same as the French are now trying with the Scallop fishing. Try talking to local Cornish and Devon skippers it would really open your eyes to the stunts being pulled, and not to the benefit of local trawlers and inshore boats. No I'm not involved with commercial fishing in any way just used to fish on angling boats and occasionally crewed one when the skipper was short of a crew.

I have to say I love fish.  I eat much more fish than I do meat.

Not gonna argue with that steve.

But let's not forget that North Sea Cod stocks fell some 84% from 1970 to 2006.  We almost wiped out our fish stocks.

About 90% of the cod consumed in the UK in recent years comes from guess where? - Iceland.

Not sure about the "WE" remark unless the "we" are humans.I was in Porto last year and was amazed to see so much cod -rows of it, salted and stacked up in boxes waist high with most of it about the size of a fazer seat - some bigger, that was in the equivalent size shop of a tesco express or Co-op. But smaller side street shops also sell it so that you can find it everywhere.
I don't see how the uk should feel so guilty about a shitty piece of cod once a fortnight from the local chippy.
Their love of salted cod comes from pre refrigeration days where they would have to salt it to survive the journey back to Portugal from the north sea.
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

In other countries they eat Roach and Perch - so should we.I believe Monk fish used to be caught by accident and thrown back, it now costs a small fortune.

Edit to say --- It gets my goat that--Monk fish used to be caught by accident and thrown back, it now costs a small fortune. As this is a GET MY GOAT THREAD --- cough !

We the UK.  Oh I've corrected my dates, 1970 - not 1870 - DOH.

We’ve still got a significant fishing and seafood industry here in Scotland.  It’s a big export industry for Scotland.  But of course, the export side of it is under threat by BREXIT.

With the rising price of fish Pollock is another recent addition, it’s dirt cheap.

Fazersharp you've hit the nail on the there our fishermen for the most part follow the rules to the letter, not all other trawlers are so diligent in there applying or the rules. Dumping tons of fish because they have caught their quota of cod etc it's dead by the time it gets on the deck how does that protect the fish stock, all it achieves is to protect the high prices the large trawler fleet owners get for the fish they land, As for Iceland bet Scotland, Shetlands and other countries with the north sea on their shores would like a 200mile exclusion zone for foreign trawlers.

Rumour has it that as the last commissioned war ship seaworthy available HMS VICTORY is be being made ready for sea to protect the British trawlers from the French. She will be putting to sea if/when they can find a crew that can sail her.

I shall be sampling some fine Scottish sea produce at The Green Seafood Shack in Oban on holiday next week.

Staying at Fort William, but Oban is worth a visit for that alone :b

(It's the shack that's green, not the seafood  Wink )

What's HMS Victory going to do?  Sink a few French trawlers?  Show em who's boss?
It's bollocks.
The situation should and can be solved by a little diplomacy.

I've eaten at the Cambridge branch where I live.

You do a bit of walking don't you?.

I'm hoping to climb Ben Nevis next week.

I've done Snowdon and Scafell Pike this year and hoping to complete the 3 peaks.

Happy to receive any tips regarding route etc.. Smile

Not done Ben Nevis yet. When I get round to it I'll be following this route - https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fortwill...rete.shtml
Which if you like walking that's an excellant web site https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/
The above Ben Nevis route has quite a bit of ascent and could make for a long day.
I would suggest there are better walks than taking the goat track up Ben Nevis.
Where ever you walk do check - http://www.mwis.org.uk/ - before you set off.
