removing a stubborn fork seal!!
#1
Hi,
Trying to remove a rusted in fork seals....
Removed top cap drained oil and took out spring and washers inc spacer.
Now dust seal was difficult to get out then the space behind was full or road salt.
The spring clip was rusted in and snapped in two places getting it out.

cleaned up the area and now trying to remove the fork seal with the sliding method...
Will not budge.

Not removed the hex bolt from the bottom as just doing a fork seal and oil replacement.

The oil seal just does not want to move.
I even clamped the lower into the workbench so I could really give it some.
But it will not shift.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the 2nd fork to do and that is no better under the dust seal so expecting the same issue.

use a mixture of heat white spririt to desolve the rubber and get a picking tool or fork seal puller tool its basicly just a curved hook........ it took me 5 hours a few weeks ago and that what i did used white spririt to disolve the ruber and pick out the bits between the metal ring and the outer stanchion then hooked it with a hooked tool

You need to strip or rather separate the stantion from the lower fork tube, this is fairly easy, if you've got the tools and the experience, they can be pigs at times.  You will then need a fork seal puller, yes you can use a screw driver but if it tight and I think yours is likely to be based on what you've described thus far, you could well end up damaging the rebate.

Don't whatever you do, follow the below advice :eek

As with most things in life it's easy when you know how, without experience and correct tools things can very quickly go very, very wrong and permanent irreversible damaged caused which can turn out to be very expensive :'( I see a lot of DIY damage often from owners following U Tube and internet forums.  If you've not got the know how/experience or tools take it to someone who has.  I'm sure there is someone near you, who someone else on this forum will recommend.

Earlier I put the spring and spacer back into fork tube put cap back on.
Then wound the preload adjuster to the max clamped it up in the work bench and had a go at the bottom bolt.

It turned and while releasing i could tell the inside started to turn but then the spring compression helped and it loosened off.

So undid cap took everything out then removed the damper assembly.

Wow now when I extended the fork tube the tube came out further and there was a deffinate thunk when I pulled the upper out of the lower.
The oil seal came out easily.... Great outside of oil seal was full of road salt around the outisde. In the bin now.
Cleaned up all the pieces I found another small spring down the fork tube sat on the spindle taper after the damper came out......
The damper still had the 1" short (3.5 turns) spring like the main spring.

Does anyone know what this little spring is because it's not on any exploded view of the forks...

Also one of the cap bolts has an issue... It is very difficult to turn the preload adjuster. It feels like there is corrosion on the threads.

Can I remove the split pin and unwide out the preload adjuster right out of the cap to clean it up.
The other cap the adjuster turns without any issue.

I just need to make a seal driver now....
