Sorry to hear about the car, MX5 MK1 next time, they're so over engineered people are getting up to 250 brake on standard internals with over 100000 miles on the clock.

Just had a look on ebay re replacement engines, why not rebuild it?

When Yamaha stopped making the engines for Toyota they went backwards.

Hi Joe,
Engine was passed a rebuild, the con-rod went through both sides of the alloy engine block on the back you could poke you little finger through the hole in the back and your clenched fist in the hole in the front, the chances are that the stray piston has smashed the valves and possibly knocked the cam shaft mountings out of the head.


To find a low mileage replacement lump is not an easy task, (Rocking horse poo is the term I believe) and then to have the head removed to check the top end over. Removal of the old engine and the taking the alternator starter motor, and all the other bits off, the MR2 has to have the engine taken out through the bottom cos she is a mid engine, rear wheel drive car, and tons of stuff has to be removed to allow this to happen, then the reverse process and set up the new lump made it an uneconomic task, possibly £2,500 to 3,000 complete, and to be honest it's still a second hand lump and 3K is more than the car is worth.

Yeah the MX5's engine is pretty bullet proof, but that's the only thing about the car that is pretty, the are Pug Fucking Ugly motors. :eek :rolleyes :lol

If you go on the MR2 Roadsters Club forum they will not even allow you to write 'MX5' they overwrite it with 'A car with the engine in the wrong place' lol!

No seriously the MX5 has proved itself over many years and the earlier one were by far the best, the later ones suffer from awful tin worm issues.

I actually owned one for 24 hours before taking it back to the garage I purchased it from, and, got a full refund because they MOTed it and it was not fit to be on the road with the rust that was in the doubled skinned chassis along its full length both sides.

So my experience of MX5's is not conducive to me getting another, plus as stated earlier I don't want to be seen in a whore and there is no point in having a soft top car if you have to wear a balaclava all the foccing time. :rollin :rollin :rollin [/size][/size]

Don't know what the issue was and will never know as she has gone to Birmingham and is going to have a Turbo lump in it and used as a Donnington Park track day car.


It certainly would not have been dirty oil that caused it as I changed the oil every 3.5K miles and used a good quality semi synth oil.
the filter gets/got changed each oil change, the oil that came out the back was dark in colour but certainly not dirty (It had done about 1.5K miles)


The only indication I got, thinking about it with hindsight, was a couple of times that morning I felt that the car had gone over a ridge in the road, but it only effected the rear wheels, it felt like a bump in the tarmac but when looking in the mirror the road appeared to be smooth with no tarmac repairs or anything else. Now wheather this has any bearing on what happened about 1 mile after the last tim eit did that I don't know for sure, but I have wondered since if the con-rod/big end bearing bolts came loose and ended up in catastrophic failure.

Hey I was listening to a radio show today as I drove my combo van down to The Magic B&Q (Wonder why I did not drive my MR2  :'( to pick up some wood router bits
They were saying that using the word 'Pikie' is a derogatory name for traveller or gypsy folk and that you can be prosecuted for using it.

A company that sells sports gear and uses a Tick as a part of their logo have dropped a clanger because they released a line called 'Pikie' as opposed to 'Niki'.

Me thinks that shit will fly.

The traveller community are up in arms about it and the say it is no different than using the 'N' word when talking about black people or any of the words associated with the 'Same Sex Preference' community.

To be honest they are absolutely right I have a mate that is a gypsy, his name is Jess and a nicer kinder bloke you will never meet, he has told me in the past that he hates the term 'Pikie' it has a meaning of un-trustworthiness, dirty and un-acceptable in society. Jess says they are Gypsies or Travellers. Jess is a big 20 stone tree surgeon and I'm not going to disagree with anything he says. Seriously though Jess is a lovely bloke. :guitar  [/size]

It's not a case of looks is it, its about grip, grip and more grip.

Both no doubt are great drivers cars and I wouldn't say no to an MR but I picked me 5 up for £300, changed the cambelt etc and had it on the road for under £600, last 3 mot's have cost a grand total of 56 pence and I don't expect the next to cost me much more. OK I got lucky on the purchase but good ones are out there and us 5 drivers say the same about the MR's.

And of course the real bonus is they don't go pop due to poor design  :rollin :rollin :rollin

I think folks would be a bit more tolerant of travellers  if they didn't leave everywhere they decided to settle like landfill sites when they left and obeyed at least some of the same laws we have to.

When people say (like Tommy ) "oh I know so-and-so who is a gypsy" and they are a really great guy then actually they are not a gypsy otherwise they would not be around long enough to get to know them. So the ones that people know and that are described as really nice - or what ever are not really gypsy are they?
We had some 8 9 10 year olds walking down the street throwing stones - walking on peoples walls running across gardens, and sure enough the next time I go to asda I see the caravans in asdas car park, am I wrong to think its them - even when there is no trouble before and no trouble after they have gone. 

I have had experience with certain cultures - not gypsy - not saying which - not saying how but you come across them once and experience something and think -- ok a one off, but it hapends again and you give the benefit of doubt, and the the very same thing hapends a 3rd time and you think "ok I see a pattern here" so am I being raciest or just acting on experience.
Its the liberal elite left who have the money back up their morals that are the cause of a lot of tension in this country - leaving me to feel guilty about about not liking a certain culture  based on my personal experience when they have no actual experience themselves due to their social bubble that they live in.

Couldn't have out it better myself, no such thing as freedom of speech anymore. You can only say what everyone else deems to be unoffensive.
