Hi,
I have a gen 1 Fazer 1000 02 model that's been stood for some time and the exup is welded to the front plate. I either need to drill and tap 2 bolts in the collector and replace the exup valve, Plate off the collector box or go with new non exup headers.
I would like to know the bike is like with Black Widow headers? Is it better than standard headers with no exup? How do they compare to a standard bike?
Black Widow Exhausts is the new trade marked name for Sandy Bike Spares/ SBS exhausts.

They haven't got a good rep on this site , standered headers come up on ebay from time to time, dale walker still sells the holeshot racing headers which I recently purchased, very good gives a good top end boost with no loss off bottom end, good quility and saves a lot of weight and sound the business. £515 posted with gaskets, although I did get stung £100 on Imort tax. It's designed to work best with the jet kit he has, but I've got full Monty and 3 degree ign advance and works perfect

Thanks Tex ,
I did see some bad press about SBS on this site but it mainly seamed to be about poor fit on the down pipes for the 600 couldn't find anything about problems with the 1000 down pipes.
Karlo put that Black Widows are rebranded SBS like that's meant to mean something, but to a new person to Yamaha it means nothing I never heard of SBS or Black Widow until I got my Fazer.
I did want to run to spending that kind of money I already overspent buying the bike in the first place so I'm not keen on throwing lots of money at it. So I'm looking for a reasonably priced solution with out loosing to much performance.
My headers are Ok (or will be with the studs removed) its just I need a replacement valve and I think my servo may also have a failed as the cables don't move when I turn on the ignition. but the cables are fine so I'm guessing the valves been stuck a long time and damaged the servo.
Other than saying they have a poor reputation can some one tell me why they have a poor reputation at all please?

They were called sandy bike spares, I think it was to do with the way they were configured , the exup valve is a good piece of kit most bikes have something like it now, if you put a straight through exhaust it has to be set up to give the torque and top end, if its not right you will get flat spots or hesitation. someone will come along and explain better than me , try stripping the exup valve ,watch the bolts they snap very easy, disconnect the cables at the valve end , the turn the ignition on and see if they move that will tell you if the servo is working, I have my old valve which was working Ok . Pm me we can work a price, have a look at pats site there's a step by step guide on there

The 5-valve Yamaha motors are very sensitive to exhaust design. Get it wrong and you can cause noticeable flat spots which cannot be tuned out by carb changes or whatever.
The SBS headers have such a flat spot in the 3 - 5k rpm area, right where you don't want it. Their price reflects the amount of R&D that went into the design and also the quality of build.
As has been said already, better to try to fix your damaged EXUP or shop for replacement OE headers via ebay or breaker. I believe a few here have actually imported used headers from the USA.
ive got a spare valve and servo if any good mate..................... pm me
Thanks for the offers of replacement exup valves but I managed to source one locally and drilled my old studs out. Took it for a run out Sunday and wow what a difference.
The EXUP valve on my Gen 1 Fazer was seized when I got the bike. I stripped it out and refitted a secondhand plate which had a bolt through the spindle hole. So my Fazer currently runs with no valve but standard headers. Apart from a flat spot from tickover to about 2K rpm, which can be ridden through with careful throttle application, I cant fault it. But if you really want it to go, just slip the clutch to about 2.5K and then hold on tight. I have most of the bits to put my EXUP back in nowadays, but I'm so used to it now I cant be arsed to re fit it.
When I was facing running a Fazer with no EXUP, I found lots of scary stories about having no bottom end at all and not running properly, but I found it very manageable. It seems to sound better than an EXUP equipped one too.
