DVD ripping
#1
What's the best (reasonably priced or free) software for "backing up my DVD collection" on a Windows PC?

Fed up with the shelves full of dust collecting things and plan to put them away in the loft once I have backed them up.

I thought Windows media player could be used for that.

Just so you are aware making backups of CD's and DVD's isn't technically legal in the UK anymore.. Sorry to be that guy but just thought I'd make you aware.

That being said, DVD Decrypter is still one of the best DVD ripping utils out there. http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/ I have found that to be able to rip many DVD's that other pieces of software will not touch. Once you have the raw VOB files you can then recode them to whatever format you wish.

There are many good free recode pieces of software out there. It all depends on your desired output format.
here is a good start though. http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

Lord,
Grant me the WD-40 to move those things that are stuck, the Duck tape to fasten those things that are loose, And the wisdom to know the difference.

Thanks Fuzzbom

I'm just looking for a simple solution to take the main movie from the DVD and stick it straight to a format that the smart TV and laptop can play. Don't want to faff around with a two step process at the moment even if the end product it better.

I love nero 6 never done any vids though, but I wanted to put it (6) on my new win 7 pc but it stalls at the load page saying incompatible, but some have said that if you just ignored that screen and carried on then it can go on a win 7 pc, but others say it wont work.
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.
