Gear Shift strangeness
#1
So, is it just me, or sometimes do the gear shift on the FZs600 simply not behave, i mean will not engage, i have been out today and dread the 1 to 2 shift, but then once in 2nd through top its no issue, and this is not all the time, its sometimes, usually just when you need power and are part way through an overtake..... i am going to play with the adjusters on the shift height see if that make is easier, anyone else had any shifting woes that they resolved with adjustments, or the other view is i just need to practice my shifting!

Adjusting the clutch cable properly from the bottom end first, then tweak at the top, can help.
Hopefully it's nothing more sinister than that.

Saying that, i went out earlier to do the same thing and my adjusting nut wouldn't budge then it kindly rounded itself off using a socket.  :groan

I wouldn't mind but i only nipped it up, and i think i've only ever touched it a few times in years.
In a right shitty place too, and covered in grease.

I'm presuming you haven't adjusted the clutch properly yet then if you have touched the clutch cover.
It will probably sort your gear change problems out

Bear in mind though you could also have a worn clutch cable if you don't know the history of it.

1) Undo the locking wheel on the cable by the lever.
2) Turning clockwise screw in the cable holder until there's 2 or 3 threads showing away from the lever.
3) At the bottom end prise out the rubber bung in the sprocket cover
4) Loosen the 12mm nut with a socket
5) Now you would preferably need a deep set 12mm ring spanner if you are going to do things properly.
Whilst holding the outer nut in place with the ring spanner, turn the screw inside the nut until it stops, then back off a quarter of a turn, then while holding it in place tighten up the outer nut with the spanner
6) Now you can tweak the top end until you have about 5mm play in the gap in the lever

thanks darrsi, never looked at the clutch in all i had done, i HAVE messed with the lever adjust and never considered the far end so suspect some adjustment may well be good...

+1 check the clutch cable and possibly replace. Found my cable had a kink in it near the lever which must have hindered it's free movement. New cable definitely helped things going 1st -> 2nd. Still a bit crunchy mind, if I don't pull the clutch all the way in and close throttle completely (tweaking clutch cable t'other way led me to instances of clutch slipping). Was also a bit better following a fresh oil change.

My mechanic insists that without a doubt the OEM Yamaha clutch cables are way better than cheap replacements, and seeing as he deals with them for a living then I have no reason not to believe him.
Bit pricier but very much worth the bit extra apparently.
