The silver paint on my thou's engine is flaking bad, ive just replaced the fork seals so thought it a good time to sort the flakey paint out, forks off the bike so I can easily get to the front of the engine, started dismantling at the weekend, exhaust, radiator, oil filter +oil , clutch cover, generator cover and timing cover, going to blast the three covers as they are quite bad and are the first thing you see, will paint them off the bike and refit with new gaskets, front of the engine I will attack with gunk and a selection of wire brushes, a lot of it will be hidden by the rad and exhaust but it looks awful :eek....I bought a blast gun years ago but my compressor is not quite man enough to power it, got loads of air at work, most of it hot :rolleyes and the boss is away untill next week, guess what iam doing friday
so, anyone else done this job ?.or got any tips ?...
Repainted mine a couple of years ago , I cleaned the engine with engine cleaner , removed the loose bits with sandpaper , lightly rubbed the engine down , used Simonez is aluminium engine paint , doesn't need priming , I reckon it will be good for a couple more years , I did remove the radiator , downpipe , sprocket and air filter covers beforehand and used loads of paper and masking tape .
I would not be grit blasting my engine with all of those holes leading to the internals. I know somebody who had an old Gardener engine and did exactly the same as you intend. He sealed all the holes, or so he thought. Guess how long the engine lasted when he started it up? It costs thousands for a strip down.
hi OLD SON......just going to blast the covers off the bike, then a good flushing with gunk and an airline ..then do as ESETEST ,with the rest of the engine ...

I did mine while the removing the induction system thingy......cleaned it down with an anti greaser, lightly sanded off the remaining crap and used Simoneze Aluminium high temperature paint....came up a treat
here's when i did mine. like any painting work it's time consuming to get right but it still looks good today... the thread turned into a sheared stud removal debate for while but essentially it's engine painting. http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,12585...#msg141399
WOW.....nice work BLUDCLOT :thumbup.......mines not going to be that good, its in a far, far worse state than yours :o
done a bit more this weekend, blasted the three covers , generator, timing and clutch.off the bike on friday, got rid of all the flaky paint sanded down too a smooth finish and are ready for painting, gunked the front of the engine and then I noticed the cam covers looking a bit rough.so...next job is to remove the AIS.had a look but cant see the best way to get it off so just about to sit down and ask mr haynes.......not taken the oil cooler off yet, so thats a job for one evening in the week, all being well I'll be painting next weekend....oh.need to remove the front engine mount crossmember and give that the same treatment.......very time consuming job, but will be worth it in the end
:lol :lol ...yep,know what you mean fireblake :rolleyes ...theres a couple of fittings i would like to remove, offered up the socket but they aint budging......think i`ll mask them ........crank case covers were the worse, everyone mentioned it when looking at the bike, ive blasted these and given them a good sanding, not too bothered about the front of the enging, just a little tidy up really....

AIS off tonight....so,did mr yamaha start with the AIS and build the bike around it....bloody thing.might look at a removal kit as dont fancy re-fitting the thing.......time for a beer me thinks.
great link...thank you UNFAZED :thumbup .........looks better with the AIS out of the way and plenty of room to remove plugs and cam cover.......not my intention to spend money on extras for this bike,i bought it to ride it.think i may make an exception here though
