Carbs, filters and tuning
#1
I've heard it is almost impossible to tune a Fazer engine much more than adding an K&N air filter and replacing the exhaust with something a bit better, also heard rejetting is not even an option due to being just too much of a pain in the arse to get right. Has anyone tried to put K&N filters on the back of the carbs? As was done years back, so, you'd have 4 cone filters, usually needeing a rejetting of the carbs. I have just got my hands on a stainless steel Fuel exhaust system, so no idea how that will help in extra performance, I need to change the standard air filter to a K&N one, but I did wonder if there was anything else I could do? Has anyone tried any performance enhancing with any degree of success and how much, if any gain was there?

The K&N filter, without a doubt, makes the bike feel more responsive, and tends to make the bike sound and feel better to ride.
Top end, there's probably not really much of a boost at all, as i've had my bike Dyno'd a few times, and tried re-jetting it (which it didn't like), and it still chucked out similar speeds, but for general riding the K&N to me is a definite improvement.
My bike was in very good hands at PDQ, but the general consensus was "It is what it is."

As for conical filters, i believe people have tried them, but they're not easy to set up, and to me are unnecessary, as they're more for looks than performance.

Basically, if you want a quicker bike, buy a quicker bike.  :b

I've got a Fuel end can, and more recently put in a K&N. You'll notice the difference.

I would stay away from the cone filters , I used to have ZRX1100 with them fitted and I had them set up properly on a roling road and dyno, they gave no more power or torque anywhere over a standard airbox and k&n filter.

Cheers :-) I've known of set up issues with cone filters on an old Z650 and other bikes from years gone by, always seemed too much trouble, though they do look good. K&N and the Fuel exhaust it is and yes, it is what is and it's blooming good at it too and it's plenty fast enough for me :-)

I have a ZRX1200R with Akrapovic full system, pod filters and Ivans Performance Pod Jet Kit. It runs like an absolute dream with more power and more responsive engine. Absolutely no problems with it. The Ivans Pod jet kit was the key I think as Ivan does countless runs on a dyno getting the jetting spot on. I fitted the jet kit myself and it was great. Had it checked on a dyno and it only needed a slight tweak to get it spot on.

Currently trying to get pod filters to work on my project Fazer and not got there yet. From what I can gather it needs the time putting in trying different jets, needles, etc. I may yet change my mind on pod filters. And yes they are just a cosmetic choice for me, however I still want an engine that runs well. If you follow my build thread I'll eventually detail my findings. I'm no expert though, but going to try and sort it.
Feel the Fear and do it anyway!

Change the exhaust first then at least take it for a spin, or even leave it a few days before changing the filter, otherwise you won't really know which one made what improvement if you do them both at the same time.
